Abstract

The progress of a country can be gauged by the volume of freedom, equality and justice accorded to all the citizens irrespective of caste, creed, race, religion and region. Historically speaking, Dr B R Ambedkar, has been associated with the inception of organised Dalit politics, caste question, social equality, drafting the Indian constitution and mobilising peasant movement. But a true pioneer of feminism in India, he has also done remarkable work to alleviate the position of women in society. One half of our society is still not mentioned in the mainstream section for which Ambedkar worked day and night to bring them back to the surface. It would be a disservice not only to Ambedkar but to the fundamental edicts of the feminist movement, if the contribution of an important part of our society is not acknowledged and celebrated. He not only worked tirelessly to secure social and economic rights to the women but also helped obtain for them political rights. This paper of mine traces the path followed and the sincere efforts made by the great philosopher in making it possible.
